What was it that made you think you needed a COS?
I needed someone at a senior professional level who could help with the finance and operations side of the organization, which is last on my list of things I enjoy doing. I also ideally wanted a thought partner to bat ideas around with and hold me accountable for the things I needed to be doing. I wasn't ready to hire someone full time, but one of my board members knew [vChief CEO] Maddy Niebauer and put me in touch with her.
How did working with vChief Jen Anderson help you as a leader? How did she complement your own skill set?
At the bare minimum, I was hoping to find someone who could do finance and operations. But Jen brought so much more than that to the table—far more skills than I could have hoped for. Because my background is in established nonprofits but I was launching a new nonprofit, I thought it would be nice to have a Chief of Staff who had some nonprofit startup experience. Jen had co-founded a nonprofit before and was immediately able to be a thought partner for me, both strategically and tactically. She also shared her network with me, putting me in touch with investors and individuals she thought might be interested in Mind Share Partners’ programs.

What benefits did working with Jen bring to your organization?
I have more time to focus on the things that I need to be doing as CEO. It freed me up to do my best work. I feel like our organization really benefitted from having a leadership team, as opposed to just a CEO. vChief did an amazing job with matchmaking for the person I really needed, both in terms of skill set and personality.
How was your experience working virtually with your vChief?
It was great! I have previous experience managing people remotely, so that wasn't a barrier in working with Jen. We had video check-ins three times a week, which I think is a better way to stay connected than just speaking by phone. We were also on email back-and-forth throughout the day, and Jen traveled to be here in person a few times for key milestone meetings. It was helpful to have her here during those times to co-facilitate meetings and for in-person whiteboarding.
